Seeing Words - Reading Pictures.

The European tradition provides several metaphors, which suggest a strong connection between language, and pictures, like “reading pictures” or “visual language of a picture or an artist”. Also in philosophical image theory, many parallels are drawn between both fields. However, in practical art or design studies, imaging and writing are different subjects, quite contrary to Chinese tradition. In fact, Chinese traditional paintings base on the calligraphy. The calligraphy is the fundament of Chinese words and language. Original and simple Chinese words are pictographs; their shape derives from the visual appearance of its meanings. The Chinese words and calligraphy influences painting a lot, and therefore the teaching of drawing starts with the teaching of writing. In addition, the complete Chinese traditional aesthetic is related to these two fields.
